Private transfer to Real Continental with day at leisure. Founded in 1738 and declared Costa Rica’s capital in 1823, San José is a friendly, cosmopolitan city that's nestled in the Central Valley and surrounded by lush mountains and tall volcanoes, some active. It’s the nation’s cultural and political hub and nearly half of the country’s population calls it and the suburbs around it home. Known locally as “Chepe”, San José started out as a small village with fertile soils; the introduction of coffee transformed it into a prominent urban center. (Historic factoid: It was the third city in the world to use electric energy, after New York and Paris.) Most visitors to San José head downtown to explore the pedestrian-only Avenida Central and Plaza de la Cultura, a perfect people-watching spot that is home to cafés, flower shops, the National Theater (one of the capital’s finest historic buildings), and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, which houses a collection of ancient gold artifacts. The city boasts a nice assortment of restaurants and bars and a vibrant nightlife, too. It’s also an excellent base for exploring the Central Valley; nearby sit rainforests, coffee plantations, zip-lines, and rivers for whitewater rafting.
Enjoy breakfast then begin your adventure to Turrialba and Pacuare Lodge. Transfer begins with a 35 minute drive and ends with an 1 ½ hour white water rafting trip.
Free day. Enjoy many activities at the lodge.
Begin your day with breakfast and transfer to Arenal. For approximately 40 years, Arenal erupted near-daily, making it Costa Rica's most active volcano. It has been dormant since 2010, but the area around it and the nearby town of La Fortuna still buzzes with activity. Adventurous travelers set out for this region of northern Costa Rica to hike stunning rainforests with hanging bridges, swim in sky-blue waterfalls, and explore fascinating caves. They raft river rapids, horseback ride, zip-line through the jungle, and relax in natural hot springs. The town of La Fortuna itself is a great spot for delicious meals and vibrant nightlight where you can salsa the night away.
Your driver and a bilingual guide will escort you to the Arenal Hanging Bridges, a 250-hectare/617-acre stretch of rainforest that boasts a series of winding trails and bridges. Upon arrival, you’ll set out on a 3-km/2-mi hike along a well-maintained trail featuring 16 hanging bridges, plus a picturesque waterfall. The guide will describe the natural history of the area as you take in the surrounding wildlife and jungle canopy. Afterwards, you'll head to the 60-m/200-ft high cascading La Fortuna waterfall. A series of steps lead to the base of the falls where the rushing water plunges into a aquamarine pool, where you can take a quick dip. After lunch in the town of La Fortuna, you'll transfer 30 minutes to the famous Arenal Volcano National Park, a vast stretch of land comprising lush rainforest, expansive savannah, and two volcanoes. You’ll explore the park on a 45-minute hike along a sandy trail and over a lava field as your guide elaborates on volcanism, Costa Rican geography, and the history of Volcano Arenal. Currently dormant, Arenal erupted almost continuously from 1968-2010. The hike culminates atop the cooled lava stream with stunning views of beautiful Lake Arenal. A relaxing stop at Tabacón Grand Spa for a dip in its hot springs, followed by a buffet dinner of Costa Rican and international cuisine fare in Tabacón’s attractive open-air restaurant, round out your day.
Today you will enjoy a sky trek and horseback ridding at Mistico Park. Sky Trek is a thrilling system of trails, suspension bridges, and zip-line cables that allow you to observe the rainforest from a variety of vantage points from above, below, and within the canopy itself. The journey starts with a ride along the Sky Tram. These open-air gondolas will take you along a scenic ride up the mountain before landing at the observatory platform, the highest point of the reserve! The views of the dense canopy and its exuberant surroundings are amazing. Once here, you will receive an instructional/safety talk from your guides before gliding down the zip lines. After your gear is properly adjusted, you are ready to start the adventure! There are 9 cable systems, the longest of which is 2,525 feet long (770 m) and 456 feet (130 m) high, one of the longest cables in Costa Rica. The track extends across canyons and in between the canopy for a total stretch of 1.9 miles (3 km). You will walk across well-maintained trails throughout the cloud forest and suspension bridges along your way. The heart-pumping experience of flying across the mountainside is alluring. You will be surrounded by dense green vegetation and exotic wildlife luring everywhere. Your horseback riding adventure will take you back to an era when life moved more slowly and people took more time to appreciate the beauty of nature, the sounds, the colour and the energy in the air. You will appreciate the density of the forest and access to pastures located on the highest hills of the park from where you will have a stunning view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake. This tour includes a short visit to one of the hanging bridges during a pause of the ride.
Today you will transfer to the Pacific coast hillside of Costa Rica and its pristine sand beaches.
Today you will enjoy a beach tour and surf lessons. Guanacaste province offers a great variety of beaches and hot spots. The best way you know the most important places in one day is by taking the Beach Tour. You will visit Flamingo Beach, a nice beach with white sand and big development. You can also visit Playa Grande, a big and beautiful beach where the turtles go each year to lay their eggs on the sand. We finish with a stay at Tamarindo Beach, the perfect spot for those who would like to learn how to surf. Surfing at Tamarindo is very safe, fun and easy going (children must be at least 10 years old).
Free day at Guanacaste.
After breakfast enjoy a private transfer to the airport.
