Set amid a 4,200-acre estate bordering Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this distinguished country house hotel of 68 rooms has been owned by the Beall family since 1976. The property encompasses numerous buildings aside from the Main House, including a dairy barn, a farmhouse and separate spa and stables complexes. Estate Rooms are decorated in a traditional English décor, with heavy chintz curtains, reproduction antique furniture and gilt-framed oil paintings. Cottages, suites and multibedroom homes are enhanced by fireplaces, whirlpool tubs and porches. The award-winning Barn, housed within a century-old structure that was translocated from the Pennsylvania Dutch country, serves the hotel’s celebrated “Foothills Cuisine,” that is, Appalachian ingredients prepared with a refined sensibility unique to eastern Tennessee. The wine cellar offers more than 170 half bottles, which allow diners to experiment. Aside from a lavish spa, amenities include two outdoor pools, tennis courts and a new equestrian facility located a mile from the main estate. Daily cooking demonstrations, farmstead tasting tours, Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing excursions (expert instruction is available) and clay shooting lessons can be arranged. Ultimately, though, this is a resort at which the pleasures of the table are the primary attraction.
